I traced the birds onto the Lite Steam-a-seam 2 this evening, fused them to some fine black fabric (Emma-Louise, of course!) and cut them out.
But when I first placed them on the circles, they looked harsh and out of place.
They've grown on me a bit now, and after playing with some different binding options, I've decided to use them. Yes, the one above needs legs (as does the one below). I'll stitch them while I'm appliqueing the birds. I'll use raw-edge FMQ straight-stitch applique, the pieces are too fine and detailed for anything else; I hope it works well. I've already removed the quilting along the seams on the three circles.
I'll use a binding with black in it, so the black birds don't look so heavy and out of place.

I think they look just right! Have you considered a tiny black piping next to the binding? Or maybe just in part of the binding?
Looking great Emma - you are awake late/early - I do love what you are making.
OMG Emma that is amazing, I am always so amazed at your beautiful work, I love the birds!!!!
The little birds are perfect (though I can't personally imagine how to stitch them down!). I'm with Vicki on using a micro piping in black.
That looks stunning Emma! Cant wait to see it with the binding on.

This is looking great, Emma! If I might make a suggestion, you could insert a narrow bit of black by adding black piping to a colorful binding. (A Susan Cleveland technique.) I just love that look. Also, if you did put on piped binding, to make your binding application easier, you could make each of the four corners curved. They would mimic the roundness of your circles. Just a couple ideas to toss your way. I hope you don't mind.
Love this quilt, simple and elegant. The quilting is magnificent. Great work, well done.
Have a super great day.
