A feathering tip from a non-expert

The first time you do feathered quilting on an actual quilt, it's best NOT to use it as a feature and use a high-contrast thread. With Murphy's Law in play, you can also be confident that the background feathers using matching thread will work much better.

Even after becoming very proficient with feathers, most of the time I will use a thread color close to the fabric color. Depending on the light, the feathers will still be very visible because you are adding texture with the quilting, not just colored lines. You want your quilting to be noticed without overpowering the quilt top. There should be harmony.
